Although science is an essential part of psychiatry, it is not its essence. It is necessary to adopt a proper scientific attitude to tear away the tangles of obfuscation which spring up all around us, and yet the universal application of those principles to all the things that we do may clear everything away, and leave us with a beautifully ordered desert.
